He attempted to commit burglary, stealing a television (which fell on him during his getaway and had to be abandoned), a handful of baby clothes (originally thought to be adult clothes as it was too dark to see when he committed the burglary, and which were stolen to sell to people at a pub), and some T- shirts. Osbourne and Butler reunited in Polka Tulk Blues, along with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward, whose band Mythology had recently broken up. They renamed themselves Earth, but after being accidentally booked for a show instead of a different band with the same name, they decided to change their name again. They finally settled on the name Black Sabbath in August 1. Records, Black Sabbath met with swift and enduring success. Built around Tony Iommi's guitar riffs, Geezer Butler's lyrics, Bill Ward's dark tempo drumbeats, and topped by Osbourne's eerie vocals, early records such as their debut album Black Sabbath and Paranoid sold huge numbers, as well as getting considerable airplay. Osbourne recalls a band lament, . The album reached the top ten in both the United States and UK, and was certified gold in less than two months. Lester Bangs of Rolling Stone famously dismissed Master of Reality as . Critics were again dismissive of the album, yet it achieved gold status in less than a month. Reviewers called Black Sabbath's performance . The final show of the tour, and Osbourne's last appearance with the band (until later reunions), was in Albuquerque, New Mexico on 1. December. In 1. 97. Osbourne recalls being asked to record his vocals over and over, and tracks being manipulated endlessly by Iommi. At Iommi's insistence, and with the support of Butler and Ward, Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath on 2. April 1. 97. 9. Osbourne claims his drug use and alcohol consumption at that time was not better nor worse than that of the other band members. When responding to a 1. The record company would eventually title the group's debut album Blizzard of Ozz credited simply under Osbourne's name, thus commencing his solo career. Co- written with Daisley and Rhoads, the album brought Osbourne considerable success on his first solo effort. Though it is generally accepted that Osbourne and Rhoads started the band, bassist Daisley later claimed that he and Osbourne formed the band in England before Rhoads officially joined. Blizzard of Ozz is one of the few albums amongst the 1. Top 4. 0 single. As of August 1. Quadruple Platinum status according to RIAA. For his work on this album and Blizzard of Ozz, Randy Rhoads. The crash was officially ruled the result of . The tour was cancelled for two weeks while Osbourne, his wife/manager Sharon, and drummer Aldridge returned to Los Angeles to take stock while bassist Sarzo remained in Florida with family. During an audition for guitarists in a hotel room, Osbourne selected Night Ranger's Brad Gillis to finish the tour. The tour culminated in the release of the 1. Speak of the Devil recorded at the Ritz in New York City. A live tribute album for Rhoads was also later released. Despite the difficulties, Osbourne moved on after Rhoads' death. Speak of the Devil, known in the United Kingdom as Talk of the Devil, was originally planned to consist of live recordings from 1. Osbourne's solo work. Under contract to produce a live album, it ended up consisting entirely of Black Sabbath covers recorded with Brad Gillis, bassist Rudy Sarzo, and drummer Tommy Aldridge. In 1. 98. 8, Osbourne performed on the rock ballad, . Billboard Hot 1. 00. The album enjoyed much radio and MTV exposure. It also initiated a practice of bringing in outside composers to help pen Osbourne's solo material instead of relying solely upon his recording ensemble to write and arrange the music. The album was mixed by veteran rock producer Michael Wagener. Osbourne was awarded a Grammy Award for the track . At the time, it was to be Osbourne's final album. The album went platinum four times over. At this point Osbourne expressed his fatigue with the process of touring, and proclaimed his . Some acts shared the bill with a reformed Black Sabbath during the 1. Ozzfest tour, beginning in West Palm Beach, Florida. Osbourne reunited with the original members of Sabbath in 1. Never Been Kissed (1. Box Office Mojo. An company. Box Office Mojo and IMDb are trademarks or registered trademarks of IMDb. Inc. Terms of Use and Privacy Policy under which this service is provided to you. I'm 3. 3 and Have Never Been Kissed. Sometimes you have to face hard truths by stating the painful facts baldly. I am 3. 3, I have never been kissed, and the only guy who ever wanted to hold hands with me was killing time while he tried to find someone hot enough to date. I know this because that's what he told my housemate when he hit on her. To the best of my knowledge, no one who has seen me in person has ever been attracted to me. I'm not catcalled or harassed. The only relationships I've had have been online. The only boyfriend who met me offline would not do more than give me a hug. I have met potential partners from the Internet, only to watch the interest in their eyes die when they see me. I often feel like the only woman on the face of the planet who no one is attracted to. And I am ashamed - - in part because this is something no one ever talks about. We turn virginity into a punchline - - a sign of misplaced religious conviction, physical grotesqueness, or social ineptitude. We try to escape the reality that sex is a choice that some are never offered, and ignore the fact that trumpeting sexual freedom also has the power to wound deeply. The sexually inexperienced (especially those with no choice in the matter) feel a strong urge to hide this fact, in order to let people assume a common level of sexual history. It's a lot easier than trying to explain the truth, and it hurts less, too. I've sat through countless conversations with groups of women, praying that the conversation wouldn't turn to sex, cringing inwardly when it inevitably did, and trying to laugh with the others until the topic changed and I could relax again, my secret safe. For now.***When I was growing up, the conversation was always about how to say . My educators, ministers, and youth group leaders never told me what to do when I wasn't pressured, when I wasn't asked out on dates. Teenage me was practically quivering with excitement over my first chance to say . Surely, the smart guys would at least be attracted to my intellect. Instead, while I made friends with lots of great guys who I'm still close with, I was never once asked on a date. No one ever tried to cop a feel at an event or in the movie theater. There was never the hint of a hookup. Perhaps, if my upbringing hadn't been so conservative, or if I'd had a few dates in high school, I would have had the courage to ask someone out for myself instead of waiting, but that was unthinkable to me. I was so confused. This wasn't how the movies went. This wasn't how the novels ended. Most of my friends got married right out of college, and those who didn't at least had dates. I sat down to take inventory: Why wasn't anyone interested? I've always been on the large side of curvy, but I knew plenty of girls my size and larger who had found happy relationships. I've never been pretty, but again, I knew women who were objectively less . Was it my personality? I'm shy and reserved (unless you bring up Star Wars or Dune, then good luck getting me to shut up), but I'm comfortable talking to friends. I was part of several active social groups, and enjoyed spending time with friends. I couldn't find a persuasive reason why no one was interested in me. And in the decade or so since college, as the disinterest has persisted, I still haven't. Over the past few years, I've made a certain amount of peace with being single. It took some time, especially since I could find very little to help me. The books I found on being single were almost exclusively geared toward . I eventually realized that I could not rely on a guide to help me; I had to find out what the single life meant for me. I had to build a life of my own, instead of waiting to find my . This sense of acceptance comes and goes. There are days when I'm tempted to run outside and proposition the first man I can find. But most days, I just accept that this is my reality right now, and change will not happen quickly or easily. Regardless, the frustration lingers: I would have liked it to be a real choice, not a matter of mere acceptance.***I've tried talking about my story a few times. I've pushed back when people assume that certain levels of romantic history are universal; when people make offhand remarks that assume that, given my age, I've had several intimate relationships, I correct them. I try to remind people that . The rare times I've brought up this pain, I've been told that I simply didn't notice guys who were interested, or that I just needed to . The insistence that I don't know my own life. The appropriation of my narrative to turn it into a more palatable story for the comfort of others. I've tried to understand why my story makes others uncomfortable. It's possible that it's because it introduces an element of uncertainty into all relationships: What if a lot of it comes down to luck? If there's no real reason behind my lack of relationships, maybe it's just a coincidence, an accident of chance. And that means they found their partners due to chance as well, and their lives might have been like mine if a few things had gone differently. And so they rationalize and explain my story; if it's due to something I'm not doing, then they are safe in their relationships. They didn't make my mistakes. Female friends try to assure me that I am attractive, but have no explanation for why men don't seem to agree. They don't understand why I rebuff their compliments, assuming that I'm only operating from a foundation of low self- esteem, when in actuality I'm just trying to keep my grip on reality. If it were true that I were attractive, then at some point, someone would have acted on said attraction. No one has, and my narrative accounts for the truth better than their perspective does. And yet, my friends seem to think my rejection of their narrative is a personal rebuff; I spend my energy protecting their feelings from the truth of mine. I laugh away the pain that runs deep so they won't feel sorry for me. I go to their bridal showers, their weddings, and I'm genuinely happy for them. I enjoy dinners at their houses, trying not to be jealous of the cookware that they received when they married. No one throws showers for single women; all my cookware comes from the thrift store or the cheap aisle at the grocery store. I wish I could talk more about others who have shared this experience. But the truth is, I don't know of any others within my personal circles. I have many single friends, but all of them have had their share of admirers. According to CDC research conducted a few years ago, 2 percent of women age 2. Surely some of these millions of virgins include those like me, who want physical intimacy but have never been offered it. But we hide our stories, afraid of being judged, laughed at, or worse, pitied. We miss out on the support of others with similar stories. The question I find myself facing now is whether or not to keep trying. Montgomery wrote in The Blue Castle, . I don't want to be single forever. I would very much like to be kissed at least once. Do I keep trying to find someone, or do I accept my situation for what it is, and direct my energies elsewhere? Will other people let me accept being unwillingly single, or will they keep pushing me to believe that I am somehow secretly attractive, in the face of all experiential evidence that suggests otherwise? I may never stop wanting my story to change, but I will keep fighting to tell it my way. I intend to cling to the truth, even when it's a painful one. I hope others with more normative experiences will start to understand, and find ways to include women like me in discussions about sex and love, without resorting to alienating comments about what . Jejjama, furious, demands that he be killed but the King tells her that this would ruin her sister's life. Hearing this, Jejjamma's sister commits suicide. The people of Gadwal furiously thrash Pasupathi and tie him to his horse. Though Gadwal celebrates his death, he is saved by Aghoras. Pasupathi masters the Tantric arts and returns to Gadwal many years later to exact his revenge. He unleashes carnage as he uses his powers to torture innocent people something the Aghoras don't do. He arrives on Jejjama's marriage day and magically starts removing her clothes but Jejjama seduces him and performs a special dance imbued with martial arts to lull Pasupathi. She then cuts off his tongue and pins his hands, allowing a chandalier to fall on his body. She spares him from being killed to prevent him from becoming a 'pretatma'. Pasupathi is buried alive in a tomb and powerful 'yantras' are put on it to prevent him from coming out. Jejjama goes to the Aghories for help. They say she cannot kill Pasupathi now; she must be reborn again. She sacrifices her own life and before she dies, tells her son that she will be reborn as the first daughter in the family. It rivals Secret Sunshine in its thorough immersion in the Christian Weltanschauung, so much so that non- Korean viewers who tend to think of, say, Spring, Summer.., festooned with the signs of chicly Orientalist, mock- Buddhist . I might add, too, that Catholicism has been around in Korea for 2. Catholicism is not . He eschews overt dramatic gestures or button- pushing tactics but all the same extracts superbly nuanced performances out of not only the young leads but also veteran Ki Joo- bong, who invests Father Moon with his customary endearing qualities as an archetypical Korean patriarch as well as a measure of contemplative wisdom. Obviously an unassuming low- budget production, Grapevine still features strikingly beautiful cinematography by a team of young camera- men (Kim Jeong- won, Kim Jae- gwang, Lee Byung- hoon and others), particularly impressive in its use of sunlight. Whatever his interpretation of this experience may be, the film suggests, he is now happy with the knowledge that his faith has been tested and proven to be real. Pruning the Grapevine, completely indifferent to the thematic obsessions and consumer fads that dominate mainstream Korean cinema today, is a richly rewarding film to open- minded viewers, dramatically powerful and authentically spiritual. I can hardly wait for Min Boung- hun's next project, supposedly a taboo- breaking love story, and only hope that we get to see it before 2. A group of men are fishing while listening to a live broadcast of the Asian Games. One of their poles snags on a big clamper, and the owner pulls on it delightedly. The decomposed head of a guy lands in the kettle where ramen noodles are boiling. The men scream their heads off. So begins the murder mystery Paradise Murdered, which was one of the surprise hits of the early summer season, selling more than 2. Spider- Man 3 and other summer blockbusters. While clunky in certain respects, however, Paradise Murdered turns out to be a decent mystery, a rare Korean whodunit (in this case, also a whodunwhat) with the plot that actually makes sense, and good clues available for sharp viewers to put it all together before the curtain comes down. Writer- director Kim Han- min places various institutional activities of the tiny Paradise Island in the larger context of military dictatorship and political corruption, through subtle signs such as Sang- gu's arrogant behavior as a local . Seong Ji- roo (unforgettable in A Good Lawyer's Wife) is appropriately menacing and pathetic in turns, although director Kim seems to largely leave him to his own devices by the slightly overcooked climax. Park Hae- il (The Host) was also an inspired choice for the ostensible protagonist, projecting fatigued compassion and cold calculation in equal measure, his obsidian pupils glistening with streaks of chilling obsession. On the other hand, the schoolteacher character played by Park Sol- mi (TV's Winter Sonata and All- in) is poorly conceived, and Park is simply awful in the role. Whenever she mouths her dialogue in that over- emphatic, strenuously earnest . I must also say Kim Han- min is a much better writer than a director. Perhaps out of insecurities, he tries to lure the viewers in by adding some totally unnecessary John Landis- like buffoonery and comic . In these times of dreadful mutual cannibalization of ideas on a global scale, with endless remakes, retoolings, copycats, rip- offs and spin- offs colonizing not only movies but all creative media, even a little originality goes long way. Tae- han sympathetic without being admirable. He goes to school every day, but the only task he is able to consistently fulfill is to fetch the other kids water during break time. The other students, not surprisingly, tease him to his face and mock him behind his back. But Dong- gu simply smiles back at them, and he seems to genuinely enjoy the classroom and his daily run to the outdoor faucets to fill up the water kettle. On exam days, his teacher urges him to stay at home, so that he doesn't pull down the class's average score. When another student drops a frog in the water kettle and blames it on Dong- gu, parents are outraged and the principal tries to persuade Dong- gu's single father to send him to a special school. Dong- gu's poor father, who scrapes together a living by running a fried chicken restaurant, has only one wish, and that is for Dong- gu to graduate from a regular elementary school without any trouble. He refuses to budge, but Dong- gu's hopes of graduating appear to be at risk. But at last a bit of good news shines through: the school's struggling baseball team, which will be disbanded if it loses any more students, has accepted Dong- gu. Although he has no understanding of the rules, Dong- gu enjoys his newfound hobby, and he will be allowed to continue attending school for as long as he remains on the team. However in recent years, trends in theatrical attendance have been changing, and it has become much more common to see families taking a weekend trip to the multiplex. Bunt is targeted at this audience, and it managed to sell about 4. April 2. 00. 7 (not a great score, but not bad either). Thankfully, the film provides enough vivid characterization, humor and effective storytelling to make it enjoyable for older viewers too. He wrote the script for Bunt as well, with some assistance from screenwriting phenom Choi Seok- hwan (King and the Clown, Radio Star). The end result is surprisingly effective, even if it never attempts to transcend its genre. Choi Woo- hyuk, the child actor who plays Dong- gu, is especially convincing and natural in his role. Never pandering to the camera, it is his determined face - and that of his devoted father - which sticks in the memory after the closing credits are through. There, she lives through a horrible tragedy. So- yeon (Park Shin- hye, Love Phobia), a teenage daughter of a moderately powerful yangban family, awakens from a ten- year coma, following a drowning accident that took the life of her twin sister Hyo- jin. So- yeon's mother (veteran TV actress Yang Geum- seok) is ecstatic, and aggressively orchestrates a marriage with Hyun- shik (Jae Hyuk, 3- Iron), the twin's childhood friend and So- yeon's betrothed. The village community, however, is soon plagued by mysterious deaths: So- yeon also seems to suffer from strange memory lapses and mismatched recollections of the drowning. Her childhood rival Seon- young (Han Yeo- woon) is convinced that So- yeon not only killed her own sister but is behind the recent murders as well. It is up to Hyun- shik to uncover the shocking truth about the twins' relationship.. Alas, the only carryover from that type of classic Korean ghost story is the long- haired, white- clad visage of the vengeful spirit. Nearly everything else has been updated disastrously. The film borrows its Korean title from the extremely popular TV program, Jeonseor- eui Gohyang (. Director- writer Kim Ji- hwan seems to think that his film has some serious moral lessons about motherly love and sibling jealousy to impart. The dialogue is atrocious, sub- TV drama- level stuff, the pace is as slow as a cart pulled by a grazing mule, and the occasional outbreak of para- MTV editing hustle- bustle miserably fails to camouflage the fact that the story sucks like a leech lying in a flooded rice paddy. There is zero creativity in the way the ghost is presented, too: despite her traditional Korean imprimatur, she is just another PSC (Pointless Sadako Clone), complete with the awkward, in- need- of- a- chiropractor choreography. And what's with the verbal catfight between So- yeon and Seon- young? They talk like 8th- graders enrolled in a chi- chi South- of- River junior high arguing over who's got the cooler- looking cell phone. Park and Han are reasonably cute, and the latter has at least a chance to run around fetchingly dressed as a young man: on the other hand, Han also has to suffer the humiliation of having to act enraged while covered with open sores and black sesame seeds? Eeew, don't even ask what I am talking about. To cap it all off, the film rips off the finale of the dorky Macaulay Culkin (remember him?) vehicle The Good Son (1. This movie is a particularly galling experience, since a simple, no- bullcrap retelling of a Tale of Two Sisters- like classic ghost story would have been many times superior to it. Why give a film a Korean title like Heartland of Myths, if you are not going to live up to the expectations it brings? This lacuna has allowed modern artists to creatively re- imagine her in many different ways. Not surprisingly, she has proven to be a popular subject for cinematic and TV adaptation, from Do Geum- bong's quasi- burlesque turn in the 1. Anime. It was in the early 1. Teresa took her three children to a bridge over a river in the southern Indian state of Kerala to commit suicide. A poverty- struck widow, Teresa had given up on life after attempting to secure a job as a domestic helper in the booming Gulf nations to which millions of Indians from her state were flocking. She planned to throw her children into the river one- by- one before taking her own life. But after holding up the first child over the bridge, she relented, deciding that she could not build up the courage to do it that day. It was a few days later that she received the good news. A family in Oman had picked her as a housemaid. Teresa packed her bags, left her children with their grandparents and set off to join the millions of other Keralites moving to the Gulf to begin a multidimensional, interdependent relationship whose implications have gone far beyond the prism of economics it has so often been seen through. How to breaking soul ties. Not sure what to think of the deliverance ministry? Please take a moment to read. In those days, sleepy Muscat was just a decade into an oil boom that coincided with the ascension of a young sultan who had pledged to bring his country out of the dark ages and into the modern era. Newly exploited oil reserves were to be used to promote education, bring about development and build an infrastructure that would attract millions of migrant workers. In July 1. 98. 3, a few years after Teresa’s arrival, an Omani family in the neighbourhood brought home a third child. The mother, answering the government’s call for educators, had recently taken up a job as an English teacher at a public school and Teresa was asked to tap into her network in Kerala to find a nanny for the family. By September 1. 98. Keralite woman, Rajina, found a home in Muscat, and from then until I turned 1. Watch the latest episodes of Lethal Weapon. When a million dollar casino heist takes a deadly turn, Riggs befriends the only credible witness, an eight-year-old.Canada, Rajina adopted our family as her own. A mother of three, Rajina had made it clear that her objective was to put her children through school, build her family a home and get her children married before retirement. That took her almost two decades to achieve, giving her and me ample time to grow very close to each other. As a child, I would often cuddle up with her at night. With one hand on my head and the other clutching her prized blue rosary beads, Rajina would often recite to me the opening chapter of the Quran, the fatiha, in incomprehensible Arabic that I would feel obliged to repeatedly correct. A devout Catholic, she and my mother were in complete harmony with each other’s religion. For my family, her strong faith was a guarantee of her trustworthiness and integrity, and for her, Islam seemed to be an extension of her own beliefs. She and my mother developed a companionship at home, and Rajina became renowned in our extended family for her good cooking. Given that it took years to get a terrestrial phone line in her village, communication with her family was infrequent and limited. For every milestone in her children’s lives that she was not present for, she would receive photographs in the post months later that she would proudly show to our entire family, eagerly waiting to move back and share her family’s joy. A sad irony is that the incident that allowed her to achieve her objective and retire earlier than expected also compounded the deterioration of her health later in her life. I remember the day clearly. It was a Friday afternoon in April 1. Rajina had donned a colourful sari to spend her day off worshipping at a nearby church followed by a shopping trip with her friends at the bustling Ruwi High Street. That afternoon, the phone rang and it was a call from one of Muscat’s main hospitals, Al Khoula. There had been an accident. As my parents rushed out of the house, my visibly shaken mother handed me a copy of the Quran open at a chapter she told me to recite. I nodded and complied, shivering as I read the chapter over and over again, refraining from asking too many questions or insisting on accompanying them out of fear of what I would discover. Rajina had been hit by a car as she was crossing the road outside the church. She spent several weeks in hospital with a back injury and was later compensated handsomely by the motorist’s insurance company. She used the money to expedite the building of a home for her family, the last task on her check list. She and my mother broke the news of her retirement to me a year before her departure. She had grown tired of working and had achieved all her objectives. Despite being almost illiterate herself, she had managed to give her children an education, a roof over their heads and a bright future. I begrudgingly accepted, being told that she saw no reason to stay any longer if I were to go off to university abroad for the next four years.
Despite having promised to visit Rajina in Kerala for years, it took me almost a decade and a half to finally make the journey after being told that she had fallen ill and that her health was deteriorating — aggravated partly by the injuries she suffered due to the car accident nearly two decades ago. She wanted to see us then more than ever. My mother and I packed our bags and left for my first ever trip to India. My time in Kerala was an eye- opening experience. Having arrived from Delhi, which often makes headlines as the rape capital of India, I was surprised to see the roles assumed by women in society and the workplace. Women did all kinds of jobs, rode motorcycles and strolled alone in the streets after dark. The 1. 98. 0s exodus to the Gulf perhaps played a part in strengthening the role of women as the focal point of families. In tens of thousands of Keralite families, women who left for the Middle East at the start of the Gulf boom became the primary wage earners, sending home hard currency and often leaving their husbands to take secondary roles in the house. But the most tangible impact of the Gulf boom on Kerala was felt by touring Kochi (formerly Cochin) and talking to people on the streets. Over 2,0. 00 kilometres from home, the influence of the Gulf countries could be seen, heard and felt everywhere — from the salesman in a mall who spoke to Middle Eastern tourists in Arabic to the vast development projects funded by Keralite tycoons who made their millions in the region and began pouring the money back home.“How is Sultan Qaboos’s health now?” our driver enquired upon learning where we were from. He grinned at my surprised reaction, explaining that he had once worked in the southern Omani city of Salalah as a carpenter. Many Keralites we met similarly displayed a sense of affinity upon learning that we were Khaleejis, recalling fond memories of life in the Gulf. In some cases, I gave up trying to speak to people in Hindi, finding that it was easier to get by in Arabic. Over a decade after she had left, my mother was determined on finding another Rajina, and decided to use our trip to Kerala as an opportunity to head- hunt a maid who would accept a job in Muscat. Given the strengthening of the Indian economy and the number of reported cases of abuse against maids in the Gulf, it had become next to impossible to attract domestic helpers from India to the region. My mother had tasked Rajina’s younger son, Thomas, with finding her a new domestic helper. Upon learning how much the maid would be expected to earn, Thomas shook his head: “I get a maid three times a week and she makes almost as much”. My mother was shocked. I grinned with amusement. I sympathised with my mother’s plight, but smirked at the irony that our former maid’s son paid his own maid a salary close to what we were willing to pay. The cycle had finally been broken, and millions of poor Keralite parents who made a generational sacrifice by migrating to the Gulf had successfully lifted their families out of poverty. I was relieved that a new generation of Keralite children would not be orphaned by a mother’s paradoxical need to abandon her own children in order to look after them, but was at the same time selfishly grateful that I had made a lifelong relationship with one woman who had done that.* * *I went to Rajina’s house with a heavy heart, dreading the meeting partly due to fear that it would be our last, and partly with the concern that she would have aged to a point that I would not recognise her from my memories. She had indeed aged significantly, having lost all her teeth and a significant amount of mobility, but her memory was as sharp as ever, and her joy at seeing my mother and I brought tears to her eyes and ours. My biggest fear was that her separation from her children would have robbed them of feelings of kinship to their mother. Rajina had not been there to love and care for her children when she was needed the most. She was not there to witness their graduations and the birth of their children and was instead looking after my family and me. In an attempt to fulfill her children’s material needs, she had wholly neglected their emotional ones. I was haunted by the thought that her children would punish her for it — even inadvertently, by neglecting their mother in her time of need, and was constantly reminded of my cousin’s former nanny who had been thrown out by her daughter- in- law from the very home she had worked abroad for decades to build. The elderly woman was found roaming the streets alone and was eventually cared for by my extended family until she passed away last year. It was a relief to see that not only was Rajina well cared for by her family, but that she had grown to become the most important member of the house. She lived with pride and confidence in the bungalow that she worked for years to help build, feeling no apparent sense of burden on her children in her ailing state. She was the master of the house, commanding respect, attention and awe — an ironic contrast to the role she once played in our home as a maid. But what shocked me the most was that almost 1.
